A shopkeeper marks a shirt at ₹1200 and offers a discount of 15%. He marks a pair of trousers at ₹2000 and offers a discount of 25%. If a customer buys 3 shirts and 2 trousers, find the approximate overall discount percentage on the total purchase.

  1. 18.56%

  2. 20.26%

  3. 23.95%

  4. 25.56%

Answer: B

Solution

Solution: Total marked price \(=3\times1200+2\times2000=7600\). Discount on 3 shirts \(=3\times1200\times\frac{15}{100}=540\). Discount on 2 pairs of trousers \(=2\times2000\times\frac{25}{100}=1000\). Total discount \(=540+1000=1540\). Overall discount percentage \(=\frac{1540}{7600}\times100\approx20.26\%\). Trick: Use the total discount divided by the total marked price; do not take a simple average of the two discount rates.
